Explore the Call Episode 13: Red Flags and Warning Signs

When is a call to ministry NOT a call at all? There are many red flags that everyone should look for when considering a call to ministry:

Here are five red flags that you should consider:

  1. If your call to ministry is externally driven (imposed on you by others) – not an inescapable urge to follow God into the ministry. God’s call is not driven by expectations of family members, or those you know that are in ministry. It must come from God and birthed in your spirit.
  2. If your call to ministry is based on your feelings. Feelings often change and fluctuate – they can change with circumstances.
  3. If your call to ministry is fueled by guilty obligations. If you feel that you owe God a life-debt or life-service, that is not a legitimate call to ministry.
  4. If your call to ministry is driven by a need for power and control.
  5. If your call to ministry is driven by a need for recognition. Some make career choices based on this need for recognition. This is a set-up for failure.

If any of these warning signs are present in your call to ministry, then it is time to pause and reconsider. The Holy Spirit desires to reveal God’s will for your life. If you are not called to ministry, then He is simply narrowing down your focus so that you may follow the right plan He has for you.
