Explore the Call Episode 16: Can Women be Ministers? – Part 2

Discover why God has called, and continues to call women into full-time ministry.

Here are some reasons why we believe God calls women into ministry:

  1. Scripture, not culture, should be the rule of faith and conduct. The Bible should transform our culture, not the opposite. Cultural bias will obscure proper interpretation of Scripture. In Romans 16:1-2, Paul recommends the ministry of a female named Phoebe who was a deaconess.
  2. Women have always been active in God’s service. Junias, Miriam, Debra (prophet & judge), Huldah (2 Kings 22), Priscilla (teacher in Ephesus), and Philip (had four daughters who were known prophets).
  3. Spirit-filled faith has always embraced women in ministry. There is no limitation in the expression of these ministry gifts to men only. In Acts 2:16-17, it says both sons and daughters would prophesy.

What can young women do to prepare for your call to ministry?

  1. Confirm and clarify your call.
  2. Become encouraged by the fact that most churches value women in ministry – although there may be some obsticles.
  3. Connect with other women in ministry and establish a mentor relationship.
  4. Be patient with others who interpret the Bible differently than you do.
  5. Know that if God has called you and He will provide a ministry for you to serve in.

This is an excellent podcast. There is no biblical ground that limits the call of woman to ministry. Like the podcast says, we should look to Scripture not culture. We should not let our culture over power the Bible. Women have always been active in God’s services and when we look at the Bible we see many woman like Merriam (Prophet), Debra (judge of Israel), Priscilla (teaching ministry who had influenced Apollo’s doctrine and relationship with God), Philip had four daughter who were prophetesses. God can use woman in the ministry and pour out different gifts. Spirit filled faith has always been the most important thing in ministry. I believe that spirit filled faith is what God uses. There is no favoritism in gender. How you are walking with God will ultimately show your effectiveness in ministry. Continue to confirm the call, and woman should know that God desires to have them in ministry. Don’t look to other people’s opinion on your calling, be patient, and know that you are called to this specific ministry. Thank you Explore the Call because it is very encouraging to hear this. Women have always had an active role in ministry and it is good that you are confirming this. It gives woman everywhere hope. Thank you Pastor Gene, keep going in your ministry. Your podcasts are blessing my ministry and my life.

      Hello Stef,

I completely agree. No woman should feel limited in ministry or life because others say so. Woman should feel free to follow the path that God has for them. These biblical examples are very true. Woman have played a major role in accomplishing the will of God. Keep the faith always Stef. Continue to minister and be a witness for His glory. Blessings.

    Stef,

Thanks for the comment. Tell me a little about yourself. Are you already in ministry or preparing for ministry?
    Pastor Gene

  3. Stef says:

Hello Pastor Gene, how are you? Thank you for asking me about my ministry, I really appreciate it. Well I am currently preparing for ministry, I attend Zion Bible College. I am in my freshmen year and currently my minor is Pastoral ministry, but I would also like to extend my ministry by getting involved in Christian Education; I feel that God has put it in my heart to teach others. In terms of ministry work, I teach at my helps church. God opened the doors for me to teach, the adult Sunday school Sunday mornings. It has been a great experience because I don’t only minister to them but them also minster to me, by giving me their input. I am very thankful to God for the opportunity to teach. At Zion Bible College we have a ministry group called Street Team, in which I am also involved. Street Team is a group of students that go to different organization and work with children, youth and adults. Through Street Team God has really opened my eyes to see the need of children and youth of this world. God showed me that people want to be loved; we do just that by being there for them and loving them like Christ loves them. We show them the love of Christ through the way we live. For now these are the things that God has placed in my life. I am amazed because never did I think that I would be involved in any of these things, but God has called me and He is preparing me now, by bringing me to Zion Bible College, and having me work in these different areas.
    Blessings Pastor Gene

As a student of Zion,I have heard many, many student speak on this both negative and positive. I now wonder why students were against women in ministry based on the two scriptures in the previous episode when Paul, himself, mentions women in ministry. My aunt tells me that I never like to listen to something without searching for the correct answer, like on Focus on the Family, they mentioned how if you look up the word “gosh” in the dictionary it will tell you that it is another word used to sayr “God.” I was like no way I need to look it up, I went back after words and checked it, it did say that. Now that I have this plus the bible has a reference, I can tell those who are against it that they are wrong and that they really need to do there research. For unbelievers, this is an awesome resource because once you are saved especially as a women, even pastors will reject your idea of being a minister. My friend who is going to Zion, hopefully next semester, was told by her youth pastor that he would not do the referral because she was a woman who wants to become a youth pastor, I told her she did an awesome job of picking Zion because it was founded by a woman and is a college not only for men but is for women in ministry.

    • Anthony says:

Yes Katrina. Doing research is very important. When it comes to religion and God, I have gotten myself to a point where I do not take anything at face value. I have always gone back and done research to confirm that this lines up with God’s word. It is a great skill to have. Continue to encourage young women to be involved in ministry. God bless.
