The Ministry is a “being” profession. In other words, who you are is more important than what you do. The Bible makes it clear that a minister’s moral and spiritual qualities qualify him more than his gifts or natural abilities.
There are three characteristics that are to be looked in order to be a successful minister:
- The importance of character
- The biblical qualifications of a minister
- The development of these qualities in your life
Character is very important in ministry because…
- It determines your destiny
- It will be reproduced in the people you lead
- It reveals your maturity
The Apostle Paul mentions the qualifications of a minister in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9. When these two Scriptures are combined, we can identify twenty qualities that define a minister’s character. A complete list of these qualities is found in the Equipment Room on this site.
You may feel unworthy and unqualified if you perceive a lack of these qualities in your own life. Then again, you may find that you do possess some of these qualities, but need to develop in other areas. Do not become discouraged by any weaknesses you see in your life. In 2 Corinthians 12:9, Paul says, “In your weakness, God’s power is made perfect.” The important thing is that you continue growing in your faith and your character.
Practical ways to improve your character:
- Push yourself to grow
- Make yourself accountable to others
- Stay sensitive to the Holy Spirit
Use the biblical qualifications list to practice continual self-evaluation, introspection, and repentance. Learning to respond quickly to the Spirit’s conviction in order to initiate change in your life is crucial. Remember to keep the faith, and continue to Explore the Call.
