The call of God is a call to preparation. Many young people do not understand the need for formal training. Some of you may be wondering, “Why is the call of God not enough to qualify me?” You may also be wondering, “Why should I waste time getting an education when people are dying and going to hell?”
In this podcast, three questions will be answered…
- Why is formal training important?
- What will it consist of?
- How will I get it?
Formal training is important because…
- Ministry is a profession that requires a knowledge base that equips you to minister on a spiritual level
- When God calls someone into ministry, He first prepares them for that ministry
- Many churches require certain levels of education and ministerial experience
Formal training will consist of…
- Biblical Training
- Hermeneutics
- Theology
- Preaching/Teaching
- Church History
- Discipleship
- Church Administration
- Special Ceremonies
- Pastoral Counseling
How will I get it?
- Attend an accredited Bible college or university which gives a formal degree while meeting the educational requirements of your church
- Participate in an independent correspondence program that satisfies the vocation’s educational requirements
- Seek independent or self-proclaimed ordination based on life experience or delegation of authority by a pastor
Many ministers believe that formal training at a Bible college provides the best preparation for ministry. In order to be effective, a person needs more than passion. It has become apparent that passion without education can do more harm than good.
Pursuing formal training is a crucial step in your life that will surely enrich your ministry. Seek God on this subject and continue to explore your call.

Formal training is important, a systematic approach used in a Bible college setting can allow you to learn at a faster pace and eliminate poor aplication of Biblical truths. Courses are scheduled to build foundations for deeper study, with a well rounded approach to the study of the whole Bible. I have listened to several of the podcasts and I am impressed. Keep up the good work, and may God be blessed as you help people answer the call of God in their lives.
Blessings, Ed.
